ESNM Newsletter - January 2020

Dear ESNM Member
Looking back on the past year makes me proud, great to see what the ESNM community has reached and experienced together! Many thanks to all those people who supported the development of ESNM to become this great Society. Below, a few achievements are listed:

  • NeuroGASTRO 2019 was held in beautiful Lisbon with an excellent scientific programme and participants from all around the globe enjoying this prosperous meeting
  • this meeting was again an indication of how our 17 affiliated societies are working successfully together to highlight ESNM as the number one European representation of Neurogastroenterology and Motility!
  • expansion of networking between young and experienced researchers and clinicians (TANDEM and Hands-on courses)
and support of 10 endorsed events in the field of neurogastroenterology
  • our continuously growing participation in different committees in the UEG and cooperation with our partner societies around the world (ANMS, ANGMA, AGA) highlights the importance of our topics
  • ESNM sections (on education, gut microbiota and health media, meeting and research) have been very effective and contributed a lot to foster the development and visibility of the neurogastroenterology and motility in the field

ESNM is eagerly looking into a new year with great expectations, new scientific meetings (GMFH Summit in Spain, and FNM 2020 in Australia, hands on courses).

Certainly one of the most exciting aims in 2020 will be the election of the new president of ESNM. After eight extremely successful years it’s time for me to move on with new projects and to pass the baton to the next generation.

Giovanni Barbara, President ESNM

Time to pass the baton

Time is flying and our current president, Giovanni Barbara would like to head for new challenges.
We herewith would like to invite you to nominate a suitable colleague or personally apply for the position of ESNM President for a four year term starting Fall 2020 with possibility of re-election. The Steering Committee will propose the candidate to the General Assembly for final ratification.
You must submit your nomination via email to info@esnm.eu until Tuesday January 21, 2020.

New Initiative from NMO Journal

We are excited to share an exciting new initiative from Neurogastroenterology and Motility, which serves as the official journal for both the ESNM and ANMS. The journal will publish a set of guidelines papers, position statements and consensus documents every year in an initiative supported by the publisher. ESNM is inviting its members to submitting proposals for such papers. Submission is a competitive process and a pre-proposal needs to be submitted for their approval before being forwarded and reviewed by all the editors at the journal.

Congratulation Maxime Mahé UEG Rising Star 2020!
Congratulation to Maxime Mahé who was selected as one of ten UEG Rising Stars 2020! His application was supported by ESNM! He will give his Rising Star presentations at UEG Week Amsterdam 2020!

ESNM Guidelines on Functional Constipation in Adults

November 22, 2019 the ESNM Guidelines on functional constipation in adults has been published in Neurogastroenterology and Motility. These guidelines have been produced with the participation of different specialists across Europe involved in management of constipation.
The guideline provides evidence based practical algorithms for diagnosis and stepwise treatment of constipation in adults.
Implementation of the guideline should improve and harmonize management of constipation across different countries in Europe.

Could your pills be marking you ill?

Interesting comment from Ger Clarke and Niall Hyland (Irish Society of Gastroenterology Neurogastroenterology representative) on the topic of how medication interacts with the microbiome. A new study, presented at UEG, has revealed that 18 commonly used drug categories extensively affect the bacteria living in the gut. Eight different categories of drugs were also found to increase antimicrobial resistance mechanisms in study participants.
