Graphical Abstract: Personalized Mapping of Drug Metabolism by the Human Gut Microbiome

Individual differences in response to the same drug are very common in clinical practice. Doctors are to often simplifying this problem and use the fact that not all the people are the same and that there are genetic variations responsible for side effects as the universal response to this question. In the meantime, our patients suffer from the side effects, or, maybe even worse, from lower efficacy of the drug that is indispensable for their condition. Click on the link to read full article

Review: The use of Impedance Planimetry (Endoscopic Functional Lumen Imaging Probe, EndoFLIP®) in the Gastrointestinal Tract: A Systematic Review

This systematic review summarizes the available data in literature until June 2020, using MEDLINE‐PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar databases on the use of the EndoFLIP® system in the gastrointestinal tract, including sphincteric and non‐sphincteric regions. EndoFLIP® has a promising role in the diagnosis of the major motility disorders, but the use of EndoFLIP® in other esophageal diseases like GERD, eosinophilic esophagitis or in other sphincter regions (anal canal, pylorus) will need further studies for confirmation. Clinical Review: ESNM-ANMS Review. Diagnosis and Management of Globus Sensation: A Clinical Challenge

Globus is a chronic functional disorder of the upper aerodigestive system which continues to represent a clinical challenge. A diagnosis of idiopathic globus requires exclusion of pharyngeal, laryngeal, and esophageal disorders with laryngoscopy, endoscopy, high‐resolution manometry, barium radiography, and/or ambulatory reflux monitoring. When identified, secondary etiologic factors are targeted for specific management like reassurance, neuromodulators or complementary therapy. Click on the link to read full article

Graphical Abstract: Enteric Glia Modulate Macrophage Phenotype and Visceral Sensitivity Following Inflammation

A recent paper in Cell Reports shows that enteric glia regulate macrophage activation and visceral sensitivity following intestinal inflammation through mechanisms that require glial connexin-43 (Cx43) and macrophage colony-stimulating factor (M-CSF) production. Inflammation-induced glial M-CSF production is regulated by Cx43, protein kinase C (PKC), and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha converting enzyme (TACE).
